If you ever visit Varanasi and visit to have a Darshan at Vishwanath temple or want to have a stroll around the Dasashwamedh Ghat, you will definitely need to pass by this shop which I am going describe in this post.
How many of you love to eat Chat? Please let us know in comments section because I am about to tell you about this shop where you have to stand in an incredibly big queue to get a plate of chat. It is so famous. If you visit Varanasi and start walking from the Girjaghar on the Godowlia road and go towards the temple this shop will be on your left. You can always see a huge crowd with some waiting impatiently for their food and some enjoying there chat.
Here if you want to get something in the evening, please plan well ahead and have ample time in hand because you don’t know for how long you need to wait in the queue. It happened with us on the first day when we visited the Vishwanath temple and then after watching the beautiful Ganga Aarti we decided to have chat here but we could not as the road was almost blocked with a huge crowd and when I asked the locals, they said there are two famous chat shops in Varanasi. The most famous one is this, Kashi Chat Bhandar and another one is Deena Chat Bhandar which is located on the same road but at a distance of around 400m which takes 7-10 minutes to walk. We could not get into any of those shops that evening due to the extreme crowd and rush.
Next day, we thought of going in the afternoon and came to know that the shop opens at 2.30 PM. We were walking down the Godowlia market and at around 2.15-2.30 PM we came to this shop and saw that like us, more than 50 people were standing. The owner said that it will take some time for them to open up. We initially waited outside and one of the persons asked if we could sit inside. They told us to take the stairs and sit at the floor above. The stairs were quite steep and the place was quite congested. We went there and shared a table with others and sat for more than 30 mins just waiting so that we could order something. After 40 mins have passed all who were waiting with us were losing patience and some of them went downstairs to ask if someone is going to come to take our order and we came to know that it is a self service place.
Immediately, most of us went downstairs where the family members waited upstairs. There was a huge rush and queue downstairs and all the people wanted to order their ones first. The initial 3 batches of chat I could not get as already people had paid for them and were waiting. Then when my turn came, I ordered for their famous Tomato Chat and Aloo Tikki Chat. We were planning to order one more but we could not for the push and the rush. I called my wife to come downstairs so that we could have it on the street itself.
It was so delicious that I cannot explain in words. Especially, the tomato chat was so satisfying that we did not feel that we were waiting for so long and huge crowd. All those things went out of mind and we were in the envelope of flavours. Below is a photo of the Tomato Chat. They serve the Tomato chat in a vessel made out of clay and that adds another layer of taste to the chat.
The Aloo Tikki Chat was also very delicious and you can see a photo of that below. The balance of flavours with the sweet and and Tangy flavour along with the hot flavours of the chillies with aromatic and flavourful touches of freshly chopped coriander and fine strips of ginger made it very satisfying.
This place is highly recommended to anyone visiting Kashi or Varanasi or Benaras and have ample time in your hand to enjoy the food here. We highly recommend the Tomato Chat.
I am providing you the map location also to this shop so that it will be easy for you to find this shop from the post directly.
